Of Takano and Yokozawa

therottengal:

One of the reasons I love so much the novels of Yokozawa is because they show insight to a lot of things that we can’t actually see in great detail in the anime, CD Dramas or the manga.
(Well, that’s a given because it’s a book, but you know what I mean…)

This is in particular one of my favourites.

From the first novel, you may recognize this little piece of text as this scene in the movie:

Leaving aside the fact that a lot of priceless things got cut in the adaptation, here we see Yokozawa talking about both of Masamune and Ritsu —you know, this,  the aftermath of Case 10— with a few words being of interest.

Before that, I wanna explain why I’m onto that little piece of text so much.

First, it’s good for the health of everyone to see someone’s point of view outside of Nostalgia.

Second, it’s a fucking delight that the PoV is from no other than Takafumi. He’s “close” to their problems, but not actually, and being still an outsider he gives us priceless pieces of information here and there about the relationship and his musings about how it affects him.—And seeing his internal monologue, of a grumpy ass such as him, is truly a gift to mankind.—

Third, and the most important, he, being the best friend of Masamune, knows shit no one else knows. One could expect that the unveiling of the mystery that Takano is, to be in charge of Onodera, but seeing as he has less clues about it than even the readers, the only times we can see how he thinks and behaves, are in both his Cases.
After those, we don’t know almost nothing about him, and is really a lot of difference about what how much we know about Ritsu, his way of thinking, his approach to things, than what we know of Masamune’s.

It’s funny, because the notion we have about Takano is that of a smooth, sly, calculating motherfucker whom is so sure about himself it’s overpowering.

However, it seems Takafumi knows better, which is not a thing only he can see, because it looks like anyone observant enough can catch onto it, like Kirishima.

(Which is true, btw.)

That’s why that little piece of text is important.

Yokozawa in his own words, calls him a “guy who overthinks” and that gets “depressed beyond belief”.

After seeing Takano for almost 21 Cases, one would actually be doubtful of those declarations, because sure, he lost Ritsu in his youth, went berserk, had lingering feelings for him over 10 years, got depressed as heck, and managed to put himself together -with the help of Takaumi, of course-, living half-dead inside, just for work and work only.

But there never was a memo that said “he’s actually like this for everything in his life”.
I’m sure plenty of us thought that he was calm and collected for everthing else except Ritsu, but it seems he holds the same approach for every single thing.

And you can actually see it in the manga and the novel, how he goes and says something along the lines of “…I ‘ve been thinking about it a lot , on my own…”

And you can see, it not precisely something he does only with Onodera.

The “depressed beyond belief”, I’m not going to even pinpoint that.
The only time we know about Takano being so depressed that he could not deal with his own life it’s in his first year of college , when he met Takafumi.
And, if that’s what depressed beyond belief means with Takano, I’m sure as balls I’m buying it.

In the other hand, we don’t know if Yokozawa means this as in his daily life. I mean, we know Masamune gets worried with Ritsu,  but not if this is source of some constant depression because he overthinks things.
After all, he tends to hide his weak side, only showing it to Yokozawa, meaning that as the interaction we see the most is him with Onodera, we are not going to see much in his Cases.

There are quite other things that Yokozawa let us know, like how Masamune actually takes more work than what people is actually aware of, or how he still insists on drink black coffee with nothing in his stomach, making him worry about his health, but they are only peeks of the whole picture.

To wrap things up, there’s a WHOLE LOT MORE to Takano than what the naked eye can see. And I find it interesting how it actually differs from what we have seen until now.
